What subject areas does this course include?

The way that you interact with your patients has a dramatic impact on outcomes and on your shared experience. So, we’ve created this online course to help you improve. It’s 12 short modules mean that you can work at your own pace, as and when you have time. You will explore the psychology that drives the behaviours of your patients, their relatives and yourself. You will learn through observing videos and animations, reading text and using the interactive infographics. We then support you to develop personal insights, identify your own actions for improvement via a set of engaging reflective exercises. It’s then over to you to achieve improvements via deliberate practise.

The headline topics for this course are:

  • Clarifying what we mean by “good communication”
  • Exploring common types of behaviour that can be problematic in the clinical setting
  • Considering the clinical experience from your patients’ perspective
  • The causes of and the typical reactions to stress
  • The impact that difficult behaviours from patients and their relatives can have on you
  • Ideas on how to make progress with clinical behaviours
  • The experience of raising an issue, objection or complaint
  • Approaches to receiving a complaint
  • Receiving bad news from the perspective of a patient or their relative
  • Preparing yourself for breaking bad news
  • Approaches for successfully breaking bad news

Is this course right for me?

We expect the course will take you around 3 hours in total. That’s based on average reading speeds, adding duration of the videos and estimating time for the reflective exercises. It’s formatted in 12 short modules. So dip in and out when you have the time. Alternatively, you might prefer to do it all in one sitting.

The course has been created using expert input from our Faculty of Tutors. We’ve used actors to recreate scenarios to explore patients’ and doctors’ experiences, thoughts and feelings. Our aim is to strike a balance between informing you versus encouraging reflection. This helps you develop your own insights, reinforce what you already do well and identify personal actions for improvement. So, the format is designed to meet you where you are and advance from there. It is therefore accredited as suitable for doctors of all specialties, grades and levels of experience.
