Is this course right for me?
As a doctor, of whatever grade or specialty, you are expected to reflect upon and learn from your experiences. In addition, there are regular points where you have to submit written reflections, to provide evidence and demonstrate insight, learning and progression. Examples include:
- to complete a course and gain a CPD certificate
- preparation for appraisal or other progress review such as ARCP
- evidence toward completion of CCT, CESR or other training programme
- in response to a complaint or serious incident
- as part of an investigation
Unfortunately, learning how to reflect effectively is often neglected or poorly taught. So, many doctors find it to be a chore and even problematic. Many are confused or concerned over the regulatory situation and fear they risk exposing themselves to difficulties. There are many options and a range of approaches that can help. When performed well, reflection is a powerful tool for pulling together your thoughts, feelings and experiences, for gaining and developing ideas and to clarify the way forward.
The important thing is to find a personal solution that works for you. We’ve designed our course to help you with this.
What will I learn?
Throughout this course, we explore both the benefits and challenges of reflective practice. Using a carefully consider balance of information, presenting options and exercises we support you to discover the solutions and approaches that work for you. As one of the fundamentals, we clarify the legal and regulatory position of the output of your reflections. We outline how to both gain and demonstrate insight into your actions, choices and experiences. Then we consider the demands of creating written reflections, providing you with pathways to develop your internal thoughts into submissions that you can use for assessment, appraisal, career progression or any investigations. There’s little point investing time in deep thought if it doesn’t lead to change. So, we also guide you in methods for converting your reflection into practical action.
Ultimately, we’ve designed our course to put you in charge, equipping you to engage in reflective practice for your own personal benefit, using it as a tool to drive development of your competence, confidence, empathy and resilience.
