Structure of the Consultant Medical Interview Training Day

8.30: Registration and Coffee

9.00-10.15: Medical Interview Skills

A lecture on the interview process and interview skills covering the following topics:

  3. Types of questioning. Management and non management questions

10.15: Coffee Break

10.30-12.30: Core knowledge and opinion formation-Workshop 1:

A look at all the issues of the NHS and its set up that must be at your fingertips for you interview. This workshop will help you with the information that you need to know and develop important opinions on these topics. Small group and individually focused covering NHS management issues and governance topics.

A 3 course sit down meal. All types of dietry requirements are catered for. A great oppotunity to discuss any personal issues with your Consultant trainer and clarify any issue about the application and interview process that you would like to know more about.

13:30-14:30 Core knowledge and opinion formation-Workshop 2:

Another set of workshops which are carried out in small groups of 3-4 where you will go though lots of commonly asked topics. We will work on your content delivery and presentation skills thoughout this workshop.Topics covered include:

14:30-17:15: Video recorded Mock AAC Consultant Interview Practice with Feedback

Each candidate will receive a mock consultant interview.If you would like your interview to be video recorded so that we can assess your performance and let you have a copy on the day then this option will be available at no extra cost. Now that you have learnt about the interview process, new interview skills techniques and have plenty of content from our NHS hot topic workshops it is time to put these skills and ideas into practice. We offer the option of video recording your mock interview and feedback will be given so that you can actually see how you deliver your content. Feedback is individual and unique to this course. Because different questions are asked to each candidate you will cover hundreds of questions which will serve as excellent preparation for your interview. A copy of your interview will be provided on DVD so that you can use it at home to improve your presentation, delivery and content prior to your interview. 17:15-17:30: The Pre-interview Visit

The pre-interview visit and pre-shortlisting visit will be discussed. Tips on when, how to make appointments, who to see and what to ask will be presented.

17:30 Conclusions and Course End:

A Summary of the most important points for the day and individual focused direction as to the next steps for your interview preparation. Course materials including handouts and passwords to access the post course training section of our website will be distributed.

Our Course content is constantly updated so that you will receive only the best and latest information. You will also get free access to the consultant training subscription area of this website for 1 month.

How do we differ from other providers?

Small Group Teaching:
We have limited numbers of delegates on our courses with the average group size of 6 and a maximum number of 8. This provides time for an individual approach to all our customers giving the time to focus on your application and identify your areas of strenghts and more inportantly areas that need more preparation. Plenty of time is available for feedback on you and your performance and all your questions will be addresses.We do not use a lecture theatre to train 200 doctors of varying levels at the same time like other providers.

NHS Consultant Trainers:
We use NHS consultants to run this course. All consultants are experienced in the medical recrutiment process and are trained interviewers. Occassionally we also invite a phsychologist to work with our consultant to provide a different perspective on personality and interivew/interviewer interaction to give you the edge over the competition. We do not use self styled communication experts or french businessmen to run our courses.

Comprehensive Handouts:
We routinely receive doctors who have been on other interview coruses and are not satisfied with their training. We have reviewed the quality and detail of handouts that others provide and we are happy that our handouts are the most comprehensive and detailed in the market place. Our consultant interview course handouts cover your complete application from cv writing all the way to the interview day itself. Written by NHS consultants this "book" is a complete one stop for interview preparation and also includeds A4 summary pages on NHS hot topics. Combined with the individual training that you will receive you will get great training giving you the edge over others.

Video redorded mock interview performance analysis:
We offer to record your mock interview so that we can give you feedback that you can witness for yourself on the big screen. For most of our clients this is the first time that they have seen themselves perform and are amased at what simple errors they make. Video recording is optional however 99% of our customers want it. A copy of your interview is provided on DVD for you to review at home. We are the only providers of video performance analysis which highlights our dedication for quality assurance and great training at the cutting edge.

High verbal recommendation rate:
Most of our doctors come from verbal recommendations. This itself speaks volumes for the attention to detail and quality of the training that we provide.

High consultant appointment rate:
95% of our doctors who attend this course receive an offer of appointment to a consultant position within 2 attempts. We believe no other provider has a higher conversion rate than us

    Case Report:

    Sabeena had been unsuccessful in applying for an NHS post as a Consultant Gynaecologist for some time despite 2 previous interviews. The feedback she had received from previous AAC panels was that she came across as unstructured and disorganised. She was also told that she was not strong on management issues which would be expected as a key role within the advertised Consultant posts. She had no problems getting short listed however was over powered by the AAC panel process. Sabeena contacted us and arranged to attend the Oxford Consultant Interview Course.

    During the course it became apparent that Sabeena had a very strong clinical background however lacked individual exposure to management within the NHS. Her video recorded session highlighted a dedicated and motivated individual who was too focused on clinical aspects to her application. Her factual knowledge and understanding of the workings of the NHS were poor and her opinions on how she would strategically advance the advertised post had been given no prior thought. She was also unaware of the fine balance between clinical and management representation on the AAC panel.

    Sabeena received individual focused tuition on leadership, management styles and the evolution and workings on the NHS. During the day she applied her new knowledge and her performance was greatly improved especially combined with some of the great interview skills tips that she received.
