Oxford 3 Day Management Course for Doctors

Developed by the Academy of Royal Medical Colleges and the NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement the Medical Leadership and Competency Framework (MLCF) higlights the key management and leadership areas that practising doctors should be trained in. This CPD accredited and externally validated course closely follows all areas on the MCLF providing a high quality 3 day programme. As a result of running this course for several years and training hundreds of doctors we have received widespread appraisal and have a national reputation for excellence in providing management and leadership training for doctors in the UK.

You will receive a certificate of course completion for you portfolio and also a study leave receipt for you to obtain reimbursement from your institution if applicable.

Who is this course suitable for? Doctors working in primary and seconday Care including GP's, ST, SpR,SAS, middle grade doctors and Consultants who wish to receive formal training on leadership, management and the theory of management.

Accomodation: This is not included however plenty of parking (>200 spaces) and accommodation is available on site. A special hotel rate has been negotiated for all our customers giving a discount.

This three-day course is particularly suitable for doctors who are already or thinking of moving into a role in which they will play an active part in developing services and managing others. It covers performance management and personal effectiveness skills as well as management and leadership of specialist and multi-disciplinary teams to achieve the effective working and further development of services. This includes communication and negotiation skills for managing through a diverse team, and performance management skills such as time management, setting objectives, giving feedback, and delegation. Delegates will leave the course able to write a business plan for developing the service, and having the ability to describe and discuss a range of issues which form the context for the development of services within the NHS.

CONTENT OF 3 DAY MEDICAL MANAGEMENT COURSE FOR DOCTORS

Accredited for 18 CPD Points

Focusing on the skills and awareness required to lead and manage within a medical team by varying management/leadership style, communicating and negotiating effectively and understanding how to make best use of the diversity of individuals in the team. Delegates will leave the course able to write a business plan for developing the service, and having the ability to describe and discuss a range of issues which form the context for the development of services within the NHS. Designed to maximise the opportunity for individual practice, development and feedback, the Oxford Medical 3 day Medical Management course will provide you with a comprehensive knowledge of:

  1. What are the different types and purposes of teams and how does this affect how you work within and manage these? Discover how to effectively managing conflict within a team.
  2. Learn how to identify individual’s diverse skills and strengths within multi-disciplinary teams.
  3. Discover the essential performance management areas every doctor should know. How to get the maximum from your team, providing effective guidance and direction to others and conducting performance reviews.
  4. Leadership and Management, are they the same thing?- Identify your leadership style
  5. Delegation- Learn how to identify the various required delegating styles for individuals and how to effectively set goals and give constructive feedback.
  6. Explore NHS Structure, finance, arm length bodies and more
  7. Effective Time management. Discover the Steven Covey principles of time management, how to take control and avoid crisis management and the secret to meeting deadlines.
  8. Business planning, how to write a stand out plan, conducting an effective SWOT analysis, funding and implementation and reviewing.
  9. Analyse the most effective communication methods and styles within management and examine the key negotiating skills and strategies essential to a team member and leader.

3 DAY MEDICAL MANAGEMENT COURSE PROGRAMME

DAY ONE

8.30 REGISTRATION AND COFFEE This time is an excellent opportunity for candidates break the ice, meeting their fellow candidates they will be working with throughout the day. This is also an invaluable time to share personal and professional experiences with the tutor and fellow candidates.

9.00 INTRODUCING THE AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE AND PERSONAL OBJECTIVES

9.15 DISCOVERING THE KEY MANAGEMENT AND LEADERSHIP PRINCIPLES USING PLENARY AND SMALL GROUP ACTIVITIES Explore how teams and their members function focusing on the characteristics of successful teams as well as where do teams go wrong? Interactive and challenging teamwork small group activity. Team feedback and discussion session. Discover the essential differences between leadership and management in a medical context and discuss the conflicting roles these may take.

11.00 TEA BREAK

11.15 DISCOVERING THE KEY MANAGEMENT AND LEADERSHIP PRINCIPLES USING PLENARY AND SMALL GROUP ACTIVITIES Identify the many leadership and management styles, what are their effects? What is your leadership style? Learn how to motivate and engage multi-disciplinary groups and improve performance. Discover the key studies into motivation at work such as Maslows hierarchy and Herxburgs Two Factor Theory.

1.00 LUNCH BREAK A three course sit down meal. All types of dietary requirements are catered for.

2.00 DISCOVERING THE KEY MANAGEMENT AND LEADERSHIP PRINCIPLES USING PLENARY AND SMALL GROUP ACTIVITIES Discuss the methods for managing diversity with teams. Learn how to identify individual’s diverse skills and strengths within multi-disciplinary teams and how best to use them. Discover through small group exercise the differing Personality Preferences and examine your own using Jungs Continuum.

3.00 TEA BREAK Analyse the most effective communication methods and styles within management and examine the key negotiating skills and strategies essential to a team member and leader. Undertake a small group scenario exercise. Self-awareness-: Learn about the effect of emotions and attitude upon behaviour.

17:00 REVIEW, REFLECTION AND Q&A,  A Summary of the most important points for the day. Individual focused direction as to the next steps and direction for the remaining days.

DAY TWO

9.00 RECAPPING ON DAY 1 Using a wide range of scenarios small groups cover the topics in further detail such as time management, performance management, delegation experiences and how to perfect the coaching style of management. Your personal effectiveness- how to `time management` Performance management: Setting effective objectives and how to give constructive and helpful feedback.

11.00 TEA BREAK

Effective delegation and situational leadership in the workplace How and why- the coaching style of management. Discuss and use the GROW model with your team.

2:00 DEVELOPING A SERVICE AND BUSINESS PLANNING “Fail to plan, plan to fail” This informative session will give each participant an in-depth and comprehensive look at how to facilitate transformation and develop a service. Covering the development of the all important Business plan. Gathering Information Making the key decisions

The objective of these tutorials is to give delegates an understanding of the current organisational structure of the NHS and the involvement of the many regulating associated bodies. Detailed information on structure, funding and purchasing arrangement within the NHS will be discussed.
