GPST Interview and GPVTS Stage 3 Selection process: Role Play,SJT's and Training Courses

oxford medical GPST and GPVTS Courses

During the Stage 3 GPST-GPVTS Selection process you will be examined using a series of tasks required to test various skills, attributes and or course knowledge that you have. The selection process runs at pre-selected venues and can take the whole day in some areas or half a day for other deaneries. During the day you will undergo the following tasks:

  • Simulated patient consultation also known as a "Role Play" exercise (GPST Role Play-GPVTS Role Play)
  • Group discussions, where your interaction, communication skills ect is assessed
  • Written prioritisation tasks, testing aspects of your judgment and prioritisation

These 3 assessment tasks take between 10 and 20 minutes each and give the examiners objective data to score and hence rank each candidate before offers are then made.A bit more detail into each of the specific GPST selection areas are menioned below:

Simulated patient consultation also known as a "Role Play" exercise (GPST Role Play-GPVTS Role Play)

Consultations in general practice are the corner stone of the patient episode and it is not surprising that a GPVTS role play exercise has been incorporated into the selection process. A set scenario will be alocated to you which will involve a patient (actor) in which there will be an underlying issue such as breaking bad news, discussion investigation and treatment options, consent and many other areas that may be expected in the general practice consultation. Present within the room will be examiners who are looking to score your performance on various aspects such as
:

  • Communication skills and rapport building

  • Your listening and empathy skills

  • Your ability to pick up on underlying issues within the consultation

  • The ability to tailor the consultant according to the individual patient concerned

  • Involvement in the patient in the discussion and to explore patient understanding of the issues involved

  • Your ability to use non medical terminology of specific nature at an appropriate level so patient understanding is clear

Role play exercises during the GPST and GPVTS slection interviews can be tricky with various aspects of the consultation needing to be clearly displayed. Listening, exploration of the patients situation, prioritisation, empathy, time management, buliding a rapport and using the appropriate non medical language to communicate effectively with your patient will need to be displayed.GPST GPVTS Stage 3 selection courses

Many candidates find this particular part of the GPST/GPVTS interview selection process daunting. Medical interview UK runs regular GPST and GPVTS stage 3 interview training courses which give you a friendly non threatening environment in which to learn this skills and practice in a way where by your performance can be maximised. Group discussion scenario: Team work, interaction and communication: GPST/GPVTS Interview Selection Station

GPST and GPVTS selection interviews now incorporate a group discussion scenario. The primary role is to assess the candidates communication within a team environment. GP's like many other doctors work constantly within a multi disciplinary team and being able to communicate, respect, discuss, disagree, prioritise, and manage each other effectively is vital to our performance togeather.

Within this part of the GPST/GPVTS selection process 4 candidates are place in a room with between 2-3 observers. They are then assessed during several different types of group discussion to pre-set requirments so that each cnadidate can be ranked at the end of the process. Each candidate may or may not be given a brief depending on the scenario used. There are various types of group discussions which are explained below:

  • Simple: All candidates are doctors at the same level of training/within the practice. You are all then given a simple scenario are asked to discuss and make recommendations. For example a simple scenario may be "The practice receptionist has received 3 complaints about her manor in the last 2 weeks from paitents. How should you as the GP's in the practice manage the situation".

  • Advanced: All candidates are doctors once again of the same standing however a difficult case will need to be discussed which involoves lots of information such as from the hospital consultant, district nurse, relatives.

  • Complex: Each doctor is given a fifferent brief so they only know part of the story. You will need to identify, raise, discuss all the issues invlolved whilst keeping your agenda and opinions in the fore front.

  • Role play group discussions: Each candidate is given a different role so may not be a doctor.

What are the GPST/GPVTS selection observers looking for?

Well this depends on the type of scenario used as explained above but generally can be in these categories:

  • Content of your responses
  • Interaction with other team members
  • Clarity of your answer
  • Structure of your response
  • The way you handle conflict, differing opinions and views, difficult colleagues.

Task Prioritisation Exercise Stations ( A Written GPST-GPVTS Selection Station)

This written element to the GPST GPVTS selection interview process covers both clinical and also non clinical elements that look at your judgement and prioritisational skills. Candidates are given a number of elements that must be prioritised in whatever order they feel and reasons for these decisions explained.
